Indonesia A Diverse Culture Discovering Media & Technology
Analysis 4 Indonesia Communicating to the World
From a foreign relations perspective, Indonesia has adopted a “free and active” foreign policy. Since the election of new president Suharo, Indonesia has moved past an anti-Western/American perspective of foreign relations. Another important part of Indonesia foreign relations is their participation of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN.) Additionally, they are the only ASEAN member to be a part of the G20, and Indonesia sees its position on the G20 very important in representing the developing nations. As far as stereotypes go and how Indonesia is viewed by the rest of the world, there are two very different perspectives. One of those being that Indonesia is sometimes seen as not a safe place. With all of the action with riots and protests happening in Jakarta, the capital, it can be very intimidating to the rest of the world, especially visitors. However, on the other hand, Indonesia is known as a popular vacation destination. Especially the popular beautiful island of Bali. These polarizing stereotypes show the difference in how Indonesia is viewed as through the media (negative) and how Indonesia is viewed through tourism companies. Analysis 4:
