Media education in schools is increasing in Tajikistan, but it is still not practiced to the extent of Western countries. Students do learn how to use computers in third grade, but they are not encouraged to view the media critically or taught how social media influences their country.
Increasing internet access in schools has been a goal of the Tajik government in recent years. Through the creation of a national cyberzones, this goal can be achieved. Many Internet Service Providers support the creation of such an internet connection because of its low-cost connectivity, and the government supports it because it only provides access to resources within the national domain that the government can control. This is clearly beneficial to a government who wishes to prevent the spread of information about the rest of the world (See Knowledge Monopolies).
Another way the internet is being incorporated into Tajik schools is by way of the Tajik Academicaian Research and Educational Networks Association (TARENA). The goal of this organization is to provide educational institutions with information services based on internet technology.
