The photograph demonstrates bustling city life, and reveals some pretty interesting cultural facets, as well. Taken at the 2013 Qatar National Celebration, this photograph shows the extravagance and beauty of the national celebrations each year. Kristian Ulrichsen thinks these celebrations were manufactured by the Qatari government to help mold a national identity, claiming state-branding through events like this one “serves a domestic purpose as it fosters a sense of national identity, loyalty, and social cohesion”1. Through events like the National Celebration each year, Qatar makes its culture appeal to and persuade other nations, contributing to its soft power . The white men in the background show the intermingling of foreigners and Qatari people (though the men in traditional Muslim dress seem to be the ones actually taking part, while the white men watch). However, this past year (2016), the Emir cancelled all National Day celebrations in solidarity with the suffering people of Syria.2 I4
