Most photographs one sees of Qatar are taken in or around Doha, as a large majority of Qatar’s population lives there. “Abandoned Water Tanker” was taken in northern Qatar, and there is a stark difference between photographs of dazzling city life and this one. A truck carrying a load of water was simply abandoned in a country made up mostly of desert. What happened here? I7

This photo, taken by Abdulla Almesleh, is featured in a photo exhibition in Katara Cultural Village showing Qatar in the ‘blue’ and ‘golden’ hours—that is, before and after sunrise and sunset. 1 The image is striking in its hazy yellow depiction of a sprawling city in a desert climate. A tall building peaks through the fog, demonstrating Qatar’s modernization in contrast with the traditional buildings. I9

The Doha skyline is a piece of artwork at night. Palm trees and city lights on the water of the Persian Gulf make the city look inviting. I11
