Political
The political map shows most clearly that Sri Lanka is an island nation with only one major city, its capital, Colombo. Most of the cities are built by river systems or on the coast, with a great proportion of villages/cities on the western coastline. Formerly known as Ceylon, Sri Lanka is separated from peninsular India by the Palk Strait and has a total area of 25,332 square miles (65,610 sq. km).
Contextual
The proximity of Sri Lanka to the Indian subcontinent has facilitated close cultural interaction.

Population Density
The most populated regions of Sri Lanka are around the capital city of Colombo.

Rainfall
The high areas of rainfall parallel the areas of greatest agricultural production. Most of the production, is therefore, limited to the southwestern areas of Sri Lanka.
Topographical
The topographical map shows that most of the island country is at sea-level, which explains why there was intense devastation after the Dec. 26, 2004, tsunami.
