(The top 25 column is excluded here since the AP and UPI polls do not list any teams outside of the top 20.)
Commentary: Though Rewards did rank undefeated Georgia as #1 at the end of the season, it took their 17-10 win over top 10 Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl to do so. Before the bowl games, Florida State was ranked #1 by Rewards, but their loss (18-17) to then #4 Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl allowed the Bulldogs to vault past them. Most teams appeared in the final Rewards ranking within a couple of positions of their placements in the final polls except for Michigan (10-2), which as #13 was almost ten places from their #4 poll position, and this was mainly due to not many Big 10 teams defeating strong teams outside that conference. SMU (8-4) was ranked by Rewards as #29, when the polls placed them at #20, and they were hurt by their loss to Texas Tech (5-6) and their best win was only over Texas (7-5).
