WEEK 3--ALTERNATIVE 2: Using Web-based Authoring Tools to Create Quizzes/Exercises/Flashcards/Rubrics/Gradebook

This week's goal will be to try out the applications below and incorporate your creations into your Web project (Web site) for scaffolding (exercises/quizzes/flashcards) and assessment of students' learning (rubric, electronic gradebook) in a campus-based teaching environment.

Expected outcome: Two Web-based tools that you and your students can use in learning and teaching.  These activities are fun and NOT time-consuming.  Choose from A., B., or C. below to create an exercise/quiz/flashcard and a rubric/checklist or an electronic gradebook. Download any necessary software to your computer and follow the instructions.  You may need to activate an application you downloaded by double-clicking the .exe file.  Upload the project to the Week 3 Sharing Rubrics/Quizzes/Exercises/Flashcards/Gradebook forum.

Include the following for the tools you create:

  • your name
  • course name/institution
  • date/session
  • title
  • instructions use of the instrument

In minutes, set up an electronic gradebook with Engrade. School/program accounts or individual accounts are possible. Gradebooks can be downloaded to Excel and printed out. Steps:

1. Create an account on Engrade for which you are willing to share the log-in information (username and password).
2. Create a class with 5 students (hypothetical).
3. Set up the gradebook with % and letter grades and indicate the weighting for tasks/assignments (e.g. 30% Tests, 25% first drafts, 20% second drafts, 25% homework assignments).
4. Set up 3 tasks/assignments and assign weighted grades to each student.
5. Share your Engrade gradebook with us by posting the log-in information in the Sharing what you learned discussion forum.

Now return to the Week 3 Tasks and Assignments (readings, sharing what you learned, projects).
