Valerie Bang-Jensen
Associate Professor of Education

In 2001, I joined the faculty of the Education Department at Saint Michael’s College. My primary area of expertise is literacy, and I teach courses in Children’s Literature, Nonfiction, and Literacy in the Content Areas. In collaboration with Professor Mark Lubkowitz (Biology), I founded and curate The Teaching Gardens of Saint Michael’s College. Our Education and Botany students learn to interpret the gardens with their respective lenses, and collaborate to develop curriculum for children and design tours for visitors.
I am particularly interested in the role of context in children’s reading and writing, including first-hand experiences related to literacy, the implications of choice in children’s reading, and literacy in museums and gardens. My current work focuses on student use of verbal and visual literacy in creating garden signage.

My personal interests parallel my professional ones; I love to read and garden, and I nurture a passion for Prince Edward Island.
