History of Education in Vermont

Text Box:
The Vergennes Schoolhouse, which is currently located on the Shelburne Museum grounds, is an 1830 brick one-room schoolhouse.  The style was very modern when it was built and was a clear example of prosperity in Vergennes at that time.  Vergennes was one of the earliest cities in Vermont (formed 1788).  Throughout the 19th century Vermont as a whole was pushing for a more centralized educational system in order to better the education of its youth.  The learning which took place at the time was completely focused on the three R's ('reading, 'riting, and 'rithmetic).  It was a simple style of learning and is often looked back upon with fond memories.
