Text Box: History of Vergennes

Panoramic Map of Vergennes, Vermont created in 1890
Vergennes is considered Vermont's first city, located between Ferrisburg, Panton, and Waltham.  It was established as a city in 1788.  Vermont's early settlement by European-Americans is attributed to the scouting parties sent out in response to the French and Indian War.  One of the scouting parties went straight through what is now Vergennes.
Settlement increased quickly in Vergennes and as it did people began looking for the best areas for building mills.  By the late 18th century, Vergennes was a bustling economic hub.
