Scholarly Articles
Scholarly Journals, also referred to as: Scholastic Journals, Peer Reviewed, Primary Journals, Research Journals

Generally, Scholarly Journals have the following in common

  • Peer Review (Refereed)  - Other subject specialist review the submitted research for its viability to be published within the journal
  • Follow citation guidelines for citing sources common within that scholastic discipline
  • Place of FIRST published research on a topic
  • Often more than one author, particularly in scientific research
  • Ethics statement - how human and animal subjects are treated within experiments
  • Use research methods tied to the subject discipline.  For example Case Studies are often used in the subject area of Management Studies

Common Elements of Science and Social Science Research Articles

  • Abstract (summary of article often written by author)
  • Methods or Materials Section (particularly where research is presented)
  • Hypothesis or predictions
  • Footnotes/References
  • Conclusion
  • Discussion

Evaluating Sources

You should evaluate all your sources (particularly the Internet) for the following:

Authority: To determine the authority of the source, ask yourself who is the author of the article--is the individual a reporter, another student, an educator, a researcher, a scholar, a subject specialist? Look for information about the author or explore the authority of the source with your professor or a librarian.

Objectivity: Is the material written from a biased point of view? Has the document been written to persuade or to inform?   How balanced has the material been presented?

Currency: When was the article, book, video, or Internet source written or produced. Does your research topic require current sources of information or historical primary sources?

Relevance: Does the source you have located address your specific topic or research question? Is the coverage of the material too general to be of use to you?

Accuracy: Compare the article or book to other sources that you have located on your topic. Does the information seem credible? How does it compare to other readings on your subject? Who is taking responsibility for the information provided? Has the information been published by a credible source?

See http://lib.nmsu.edu/instruction/evalcrit.html  for a thorough review of evaluating sources

Journal of Religious Ethics; Mar2001, Vol. 29 Issue 1
A Civil Art: The Persuasive Moral Voice of Oscar Romero

Abstract - When moral or religious teachings have public and political effects, analysis usually focuses on the message, but attention to the manner in which the teachings are communicated is equally important in understanding their power to influence the course of events. Oscar Romero's particular style of moral discourse was remarkably effective for three reasons: First, his moral reasoning resonated with Salvadoran identity. It was intelligible within those reigning assumptions about national history and territory that could actually move a public to action. Second, his moral judgments were timely. Romero sought to discern what was possible for the Salvadoran public at a given moment. Third, Romero had integrity as public figure. He lived in such a way that his life, and especially his death, became an exemplary embodiment of the larger religious narrative that both grounded his ethics and gave meaning to the nation.
