*Scholarly Journals, also referred to as: Scholastic Journals, Peer Reviewed, Primary Journals, Research Journals

Generally, Scholarly Journals have the following in common

• Peer Review (Refereed)  - Blind, double blind.  Other subject specialist review the submitted research for its viability to be published within the journal
• Follow citation guidelines for citing sources common within that scholastic discipline
• Place of FIRST published research on a topic
• Often more than one author, particularly in scientific research
• Ethics statement - how human and animal subjects are treated within experiments
• Use research methods tied to the subject discipline.  For example Case Studies are often used in the subject area of Management Studies

Common Elements of Science and Social Science Research Articles 

• Abstract (summary of article often written by author)
• Methods or Materials Section (particularly where research is presented)
• Hypothesis or predictions
• Footnotes/References
• Conclusion
• Discussion

Answer the following Questions using the Scholarly Article: "Unskilled and Unaware of it: How Difficulties in recognizing One's Own Incompetence lead to Inflated Self- Assessments" from the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.

1. What is the primary purpose of the cited sources in the article?

2. What is the Hypothesis (called "predictions") in this paper? - just give prediction 1

3. Describe the Methods section of this study on page 1123, for Study 1.  Could this study be reproduced to verify its accuracy?  

4. What criticism can you offer about the selected population (participants) of this study.

5.What do the authors conclude from their studies?  Can a person determine from this study that incompetence "causes" a lack of assessment abilities? (look at the last page of article, p 1132).

6.On the last page of the handout- "Instructions to Authors" describe what is meant by Masked Review (peer review).

7. On the last pages of the handout- "Instruction to Authors," what are the ethical standards that authors must comply with when using human or animal subjects?

8. On the last pages of the handout- "Instruction to Authors," What is the reference style (citations) that must be used when citing sources?

9. On page 1121, column 2, the authors cites a journal article by (Klin, Guizman, & Levine, 1997)
