Information literacy can be defined and described by a number of different terms:   media literacy, computer literacy, visual literacy, lifelong learning, resource-based learning

GED579 / GSA 591 - What we will emphasize in this course

1. Search Logic: Searching Indexes, Search Engines, and Full text databases effectively and efficiently.  This means understanding basic search logic, formats of research results, and understanding the basic methodologies for narrowing or expanding your search.  
- Keyword searching, Boolean searching, Weighted searching, Full Text searching 

2. Resource-based learning:  Knowing the fundamental search tools and indexes within your professional studies.   Choosing the "correct" search tools for the particular research task

3. Evaluating information sources and understanding how they are published. (Includes citing electronic sources)

4. Problem solving, brain storming, strategizing your research methods

5. Being literate (well read) on  developments with search engines,  Internet Technology, and online education.  Understanding  copyright, privacy, and censorship issues as they pertain to your professional work within the electronic environment.

6. Publishing research and disseminating information in an electronic media (in this class, web pages).  This includes selection of organization, style, and content for your web site.
