4.Field Searching
Click on Search Methods in ProQuest. Choose the GUIDED Search

Using the GUIDED search mode of searching in ProQuest Research Library, Do 3 different Separate searches limiting the search to the following field:
A. Author field: Cronkite, Walter - how many hits?
B. Subject field: Search Engine - how many hits?
C. Article Title Field: Honduras - how many hits?
Note in each separate search above that the word you searched for can be found in that field of any given citation. In other words - can you find the words in the field you searched?
5. Click on the
tab and choose the GUIDED
Search mode.
Write out a search statement on a topic of your own interest in the box below. Break down your statement into searchable terms.

A. Do 3 searches in GUIDED Search mode on your topic. Try searches that expand and narrow the number of hits found and that improve accuracy. Remember to account for variant spelling with truncation, synonymous terms and phrases.
Write each search out below, number of hits found for each search and we will go over them in class.

6. Finding if a journal is indexed in ProQuest
Click on Search Methods in ProQuest. Choose the Publication
Mode
Find out the journals indexed in ProQuest Research Library that have the following words in the journal title
A. Education (hint: try educat? to search for educate, education, educating, etc)
B. Business
C. Psychology
7. In GUIDED Search Mode do the following.
A. Search for articles from one journal title "Harvard
Business Review"
- Hint- enter "Harvard Business Review" in the Publication Title
field.
B. Narrow the search in 6 B. to a "Harvard Business Review" article having to do with leadership
C. Does SMC Library carry Harvard Business Review?
8.. I need to find a journal article from Newsweek, 1953. Will
ProQuest Research
Library cover that period?
What other source might I use to find articles from Newsweek during that time period?
9. Find an full text article on the -invisible web- from ProQuest
Research Library.
Briefly evaluate the article by the following criteria: criteria is

10.Click on Peer Reviewed on the ProQuest Search Screen.

Do a search in ProQuest that will limit results to only PEER REVIEW articles. Bring a copy of one of your citations to class. We will discuss what peer review is next week.
If you are looking for journal articles that are peer-reviewed or the place of first publication for research -- this is a good category to choose.
11. Searching certain collections in ProQuest.
Click on Collections
. Click on the
ProQuest General Reference and open the Collections. Choose Arts
Module, then click continue. Do a search on Thomas Eakins
How many hits?
12. Using the Subject Guide to Networked Resources @ http://www.smcvt.edu/library/resources/subjectguide/index.htm answer the following
A. What index should you use to research History?
B. What index should you use to research Art?
C. What index should you use to research Law?
D. What index should you use to research Biology?
