Answer: 

A. Find out if the library carries a newspaper index:  NNI - National Newspaper Index, The New York Times Index,  Lexis-Nexis.  For SMC see http://www2.smcvt.edu/library/articles/newspapers.htm  Web sites   ---   some newspapers allow searching of their web archives, but limit the search by years, or charge for articles  

B. Use the New York Times Print Index or New York Times Historical Database 1850 - 2002)

C.  SMC Library uses Lexis-Nexis and the New York Times Index  to search for newspaper articles.
