***A French Prof. Anne McConnell best bet!

"I love the Musée des Ursulines (open only from 1:00-4:40 P.M. right now). The actual museum was built on the site where Marie de l’Incarnation (the first superior in New France and an author of mystic texts) built their first school in 1644 (after arriving in 1639). These brave women (there were very few in the colony at that time) founded the first girls’ school in the colony, in which they taught both Native American girls and the daughters of colonists as the colony grew. Some of them were true artists, and since they could express their talents only in “womanly” activities, they embroidered priestly vestments, altar cloths, etc., many of which are on exhibit. There is a statue of Marie de l’Incarnation in the tiny garden by the entrance, with her hands on the shoulders of her pupils. It is still an Ursuline convent and school. From a hotel I stay in, if I’m lucky enough to get a room in back, I can see the large walled garden and orchard tended by the Ursulines."

bust of Louis XIV and an outline of the placement of the habitation built by Champlain in 1608)."

***Another McConnell best bet!

"One place that’s great is in the Basse-Ville: the Musée de la Civilisation. Just the architecture (incorporating a colonial-era stone house) – ultra modern, but fitting in with its gables and its “river” running inside. The permanent exhibit on the development of the culture of Québec is wonderful. "
