RefWorks Tutorial
Setting up Account
Import from PsycINFO
References Page
Use
RefWorks to create your own database/library of resources with links to
psycINFO and other databases at your fingertips. Use your RefWorks
library to organize your articles by research topic, then search through
your articles by keyword, author, year of publication and more. Access
your RefWorks account for free through the St. Michael’s College library
and then connect to your RefWorks library from anywhere that you can
access the internet! When you’re ready to write, let RefWorks create
your APA-Style References page for you, directly in a Microsoft Word
document.
Setting
up your own account:
NOTE: You must
be on the mikenet (a computer hooked up on campus) to set up your
account, once you’ve set up a login name and password however, you can
access your account from anywhere!
Click
on the following link to skip to step 3
http://www.refworks.com/Refworks/login.asp?WNCLang=false
- Go to the SMC
library webpage (by clicking on library on the toolbar on the top
right side of the St. Michael’s College Home Page).
- Click on the
gray box on the right side of the library page that says “RefWorks”.
- Click on “Sign
up for an individual account” in the gray user log-in box on the
left.
- Set up your
account by entering a login name, password and your email address
(Don’t forget, it is free to set up your own account since the
school purchased RefWorks for the institution).
- Once you’ve
filled in all the fields in the “new user information” box click on
the register link to finish setting up your account!
Now you have your own RefWorks account and
can begin to import references from databases like PsycINFO.
Importing
References from PsycInfo:
One of the most
helpful databases for Psychology Students is PsycINFO, so we’ll start by
importing references straight from there!
- Open a new
internet window.
- Once again, from
the St. Michael’s home page click on library to get to the SMC
library site.
- Click on “Find
Articles and Databases”.
- Click on “Find
Databases by Subject”.
- Scroll down the
list of subjects and click on Psychology.
- This will bring
up three database links… Click on PsycINFO.
- Run a search in
PsycINFO.
- When you find
articles that interest you, click on the folder symbol to the right
of each entry that says “add”. When you have added an article to
the folder the folder symbol will turn yellow and say “added”.
- Once you have
gotten all of the articles that you’re interested in into the folder
click on either the link that says “Folder has Items” or the link at
the top of the page that says “view folder”. Now you should see a
page that has the folder’s contents.
- To import these
articles into your RefWorks library click on “save to disk” (don’t
worry you’re not actually saving to a disk, you won’t need a disk).
- This will take
you to another new page with two tabs on the top of it, click on the
tab that says “Bibliographic Manager”.
- Now click on the
third button down on the right which says “Direct export to RefWorks”.
Hit Save.
- If you still
have a browser window open with your RefWorks account open you will
see it flash as it has new items in it.
- Now you can open
your RefWorks library browser. The page should say “Import
complete- and the number of references imported”. Then it will have
two buttons, click on the button that says “View last imported
folder”.
- Now you will see
the references that you’ve just imported from PsycINFO.
- There’s no need
to save in RefWorks, everything saves automatically to your library!
Creating
your References Page:
- Once you are
logged in to your RefWorks library click on the “Bibliography” Tab.
- For Output Style
choose APA, 5th Edition.
- Now you may
choose to format your paper (including in-text citations) and
bibliography or just your bibliography. If you choose to format
your paper and bibliography click on the corresponding circle, and
then click on the link that says: “How to enter Citations into your
document”. If you choose to format your bibliography, click on the
second circle and continue through this tutorial.
- Now you need to
choose a file type in which RefWorks will create your bibliography.
Click on the arrow to see your options. You will most likely choose
to create it as a word document, so that it will be in the same
format as the rest of your paper.
- Then choose
which references in your library you wish to use.
- Click on create
bibliography
- You will see a
nearly blank screen which says: “Please wait while we process your
document”. When the document is processed a bold message will
appear that says: “Bibliography created with # of references”.
- Now you need to
download and save your bibliography. Click on “Download it”. If
downloading does not work, RefWorks offers an option to e-mail your
bibliography to yourself.
- Now you can add
your completed reference page to your APA formatted paper by copying
and pasting or merging this new document into your paper!
