Applying to Graduate School

 Graduate school information

* Explore different types of graduate programs in Psychology
            Do I want to be a psychologist, a counselor, or a social worker?

             (Occupational Outlook Handbook, Insider’s Guide to Graduate Programs in Clinical         and Counseling Psychology;     Graduate Study in Psychology – APA; SMC Psychology      Department Web pages; www.petersons.com; www.gradschools.com;            www.allpsychologyschools.com .

                * What type of program: counseling, social work, human resources, counseling psychology or clinical psychologyWhat type of degree? Master’s, MSW, Ph.D., or Psy.D.  What type of setting, what type of clients, what type of tasks do you want to do?

             * Talk to faculty – they do professional development in the field and may have      knowledge of programs /colleagues at schools of interest to you.

             * Check with SRC for Career Advisory Network, alums who practice psychology.            What do they do?  Where did they go to school?

 * Ask around at home and among family/friends.  Did your school have a psychologist or  guidance counselor?  Can you do an informational interview with someone?

             * Research faculty and their research interests at various graduate programs.  Is there someone you would like to learn from?

             * Prepare for GRE general test and subject test or MAT (www.GRE.org and        www.milleranalogies.com).

                  **** Have you signed up to take a free GRE from Kaplan ?****

 * Update resume to CV format (see example in SRC Resume Guide, www.smcvt.edu/src/career/services/cv.asp).

             * Prepare essays.

             * Seek out faculty for letters of recommendation.

             * Plan to have everything ready to go by Thanksgiving, with Christmas break as your final date.  The earlier the better.
