Saint Michael's Playhouse operates under an AEA CORST ZZ (Council of
Resident Stock Theaters) contract and hires for a four-show summer season.
NYC auditions are held in February/March of each year. Rehearsals begin in early June and season concludes in mid-August. As a
Resident Stock Theater AEA requires us to maintain a resident company with

TEVYE – The likeable, hard-working, pious
dairyman who always tries to see the positive side of life. He
is a proud patriarch and father of five daughters, closely
raised according to the old scriptures. Range: Ab2 - F5
GOLDE – Tevye's strong-willed wife who wishes
for her daughters to have good husbands and live easier than she
and Tevye. Range: A3 - Eb5
TZEITEL – Tevye and Golde’s eldest daughter,
who is madly in love with Motel. She is loyal to her family but
typically challenges the town's traditions. Range: B3 - D5
HODEL – Tevye and Golde’s second eldest
daughter, who becomes involved with Perchik. She eventually
leaves Anatevka to join Perchik in Siberia. Range: B3 - E5
CHAVA – Tevye and Golde’s middle daughter who
loves to read. Falls in love and runs off with Fydeka, a Russian
soldier. Range: B3 - D5
YENTE – The meddling matchmaker. She is a
widow and village busybody who knows all of the town gossip.
Range: F3 - F5
MOTEL – The poor and meek tailor who shares a
deep love with Tzeitel. Sensitive and nervous, but sincere and
friendly. Range: E3 - F#4
PERCHIK – The outspoken student and visitor
to Anatevka, who constantly challenges the traditions of the
town. He eventually falls in love with Hodel. Range: B2 - E4
FYEDKA – A strong, young Russian soldier who
sees past his military obligations and falls in love with Chava.
He challenges Tevye's imposed silence.
LAZAR WOLF – The feisty, brawny butcher and
the town's wealthiest citizen who wishes to marry Tzeitel.
Range: C3 - F#4
CONSTABLE – Russian military official
stationed near Anatevka who knows the villagers well, however he
has superficial relationships with the villagers.
AVRAM – Runs the local bookshop and keeps the
town advised of all the news in the area. Range: D3 - Eb4
FRUMA-SARAH –
Lazar's Wolf's deceased first wife. She becomes enraged when her
husband plans to wed Tzeitel. Range: C4 - Eb5
GRANDMA TZEITEL – Golde's deceased
grandmother, who endorses the marriage between Tzeitel and
Motel. Range: C#4 - D5

KEN (40s – 50s) A well-to-do lawyer. Wealthy,
but by no means pretentious. Takes charge of the situation.
Married to Chris. Halfway through the show, a gunshot causes his
temporary deafness.
CHRIS (40s – 50s) Another lawyer, married to
Ken. Beautiful, easily flustered. Frantically tries to maintain
normalcy at the party. Has recently quit smoking, which drives
her to drink a bit more.
LEN (40s – 50s) A wealthy accountant, married
to Claire. Distraught over the recent destruction over his new
car. Starts the show with an extreme case of whiplash.
Intolerant of the gossipy-lifestyle that he is often involved
in.
CLAIRE (40s – 50s) Len’s wife. Very concerned
with appearances (hers and others’). Starts the play with a
swollen lip. Likes to gossip.
ERNIE (40s – 50s) A psychiatrist, married to
Cookie. Affable, smokes a pipe. Loves his wife very much. Tries
to be as helpful as possible cooking the evening’s dinner.
COOKIE (40s – 50s) Has her own cooking show.
Suffers from extreme back spasms. Loves her husband Ernie very
much. Absent-minded at times.
GLENN (30s-40s) A handsome man running for
State Senate. Worried about his own reputation. Struggles with
placating his wife Cassie, who is convinced he is having an
affair(which he may or may not be).
CASSIE (30s) Glenn’s beautiful wife. Obsesses
over her husbands’ relationships with other women. Quick to
anger. Must rub her quartz crystal to calm herself down.
OFFICER WELCH (Male, 30s-50s) A city police
officer having a rough night. Does not tolerate lying. Sees
through the “classy” façade that these high-society types put
up.
OFFICER PUDNEY (Female 20s-30s) Welch’s
partner. A strong but silent type.

BLUE GIRL – A
blue-blooded fashion model with a high soprano belt – low b flat
to high C. Blue is
sophisticated, poised, cool and aloof.
GREEN GIRL – Mezzo with Shirley Bassey-like belt.
She is a good-time girl.
Blousy, middle-class, and zany, she is a bit frayed at
the edges, and hopelessly single.
ORANGE GIRL – Soprano with belt – low B flat to high B flat.
The mother of the group, Orange is domestic and maternal.
Wise, soulful, and mature, she is slowly asserting her new-found
independence.
RED GIRL – Soprano with belt – low B flat to high C.
The baby of the group, Red is quirky, enthusiastic and
naïve. A hopeless
romantic.
YELLOW GIRL – Alto with big rock diva belt – F below mid C to
belt E flat. Yellow
is an uninhibited and brash.
She is a ray of sunshine with a surprising vulnerability.

For the Musical EPAs and ECC, please prepare
a brief Broadway or pop song that shows range and personality
and is within the style of FIDDLER ON THE ROOF or SHOUT. Men at
the 3:30pm ECC should be prepared to dance. Bring sheet music;
an accompanist will be provided. For Dramatic Day, please
prepare a brief CONTEMPORARY COMIC monologue.
As a Resident Stock Theatre we look to hire a
company of actors to appear in as many consecutive productions
as possible. Musicals and Non-musicals may share many of the
same actors. Actors with disabilities as well as actors of any
race, age or ethnicity are encouraged to audition.
