I include this section on this Scripture web site:

1)  because of its obvious and increasingly important connection with the Christian Scriptures,
2)  because some feel that anti-Semitism is rooted in the Christian Scriptures,
3)  because of long-standing and personal interest in this very delicate matter since reading Jules Isaac's The Teaching of Contempt when first published many years ago (1964),
4)  because there are several Catholic, Christian, Jewish and perhaps other colleagues on campus who are interested in this question and because we  also have an annual Rabbi Wall symposium,
5)  because it is not always known how far the Catholic Church has traveled since Vatican II (1965) and its declaration on the treatment of Jews (Nostra Aetate). The Catholic Church and other Christian bodies have gone through several stages since then and both Christians and Jews should be conscious of the many advances, still in progress, which have been made. Feelings are sensitive (e.g., the case of  Pius XII, see below) and positions should be based on the most complete and accurate information possible. Eugene Fisher (an outstanding authority) says, "In speaking with Jewish groups I have noticed over the years that while the statement of the Second Vatican Council is well known, other official Catholic and Protestant statements that have been put out since then are not so well-known" (Jewish-Christian Relations 1989-1993, Documenting the Dialogue, prg. 1).  Hopefully, this web collection will be a source of such information and encourage dialogue, understanding, and the reform of what needs correction.

The amount of material available on Christian-Jewish Relations is enormous. The following is a small selection but it may serve as a starting point. I will appreciate any significant contributions which might make the list more useful. Please send to pcouture@smcvt.edu
