Rules of the Saint Michael's College Chorale

1.

All singers must audition before the Director every year.

2.

Membership is for the full academic year except by permission of the Director.

3.

Students may be members without credit only by permission of the Director.

4.

Singers with conflicts that will make them regularly late or absent may be members only by permission of the Director.

5.

At any time the Director may ask a singer to leave because of bad behavior.  If the singer is taking the Chorale for credit, his or her grade will suffer accordingly.

6.

Late arrival and absence may be excused only for (1) illness, (2) injury, (3) emergency, (4) special academic conflict, and (5) academic pressure.  If a singer will be late or absent for one of these reasons, he or she must notify the Director before the rehearsal by email (nlew@smcvt.edu) or voicemail (802-654-2284).  If a singer falls ill, is injured, or has an emergency just before a rehearsal, he or she should notify the Director as soon as possible after the missed rehearsal.

7.

If a singer is ill or injured but not contagious, and still energetic, he or she should attend, although not necessarily sing.

8.

Only two absences for academic pressure per semester will be excused.

9.

To be marked present, each singer must sign in at every rehearsal.  Failure to sign in will result in being marked absent.

10.

Course grades are based on attendance and a parts test.  Starting from A, every single unexcused absence after the first and every two unexcused late arrivals after the first lower the grade by one mark (e.g., from A to A- to B+, etc.).

11. Poor performance on the parts test can lower the grade up to one full letter grade (e.g., from A to B).
12. A singer's grade may be raised or lowered by the Director on the basis of behavior in rehearsal and performance.

13.

Unexcused absence at a performance will result in a grade of F.

14.

Every singer must bring a pencil to rehearsal.  Music should never be marked in ink.

15.

The folder and music are the property of Saint Michael's College and should be returned in good condition.

16.

If a singer misses a large number of rehearsals, his or her participation in performances will be at the Director's discretion.

17. When traveling off campus, additional rules of behavior may apply.
