Second Language Proficiency

Achieving Proficiency: introductory-level courses

Students are expected to achieve an intermediate level of proficiency to fulfill their requirement.   Depending on your assessment test score and the language studied, you may be required to take up to ten credits (eight in the cases of Latin and Greek), as listed below.  See the college catalogue for courses beyond these introductory-level courses, and information concerning the majors/minors (or see the Modern Languages Department web).

Ancient Greek
Two-course sequence:
GR 101 (4 credits)
GR 201 (4 credits)

Intensive study of the forms, vocabulary, and syntax of classical Attic Greek. Readings include Xenophon, Plato, Aristophanes and Demosthenes.

French
Two-course sequence:
FR 101 (5 credits)
FR 102 (5 credits)

Practice in grammar, conversation, reading and composition. Course material based on various aspects of Francophone culture: literature, film, music, art and news. A French Major/Minor is available.

German
Two-course sequence:
GE 101 (5 credits)
GE 102 (5 credits)

Practice in grammar, conversation, reading and composition. Course material based on various aspects of Germanic culture.

Italian
Two-course sequence:
IT 101 (5 credits)
IT 102 (5 credits)

Practice in grammar, conversation, reading and composition. Course material based on various aspects of Italian culture. An Italian Studies Minor is available

Japanese
Two-course sequence:
JA 101 (5 credits)
JA 102 (5 credits)

An intensive course in language and culture. Practice grammar, conversation, reading and composition, idiomatic expressions, the three levels of expression (polite, plain, and humble forms), use of kanji. An East Asian Studies Minor is available.

Latin
Two-course sequence:
LA 101 (4 credits)
LA 211 (4 credits)

Intensive study of the forms, vocabulary, and syntax of classical Latin. Readings from a variety of authors and periods of Latin literature to develop skills in reading, translation, composition and conversation. A Latin Major is available.

Russian
Two-course sequence:
RU 101 (5 credits)
RU 102 (5 credits)

Introduces Russian culture, history, and life in present-day Russia. The "cultural" component is taught using a variety of materials; the "language" component teaches basic skills, which are further developed over the second semester. A Russian Studies Minor is available. Note: new course sequence begins in Fall 2005.

Spanish
Two-course sequence:
SP 101 (5 credits)
SP 102 (5 credits)

Practice in grammar, conversation, reading and composition. Course material based on various aspects of Hispanic culture. A Spanish Major/Minor is available.
