Second Language Proficiency

  Options for Advanced Language Study

Many options are available to proficient students!  Over half of our students either take advanced level courses in their proficient language or start a new language.  Some students do both.  Options include:

  • Applied Language Components(ALCs) - one-credit language courses attached to courses in other disciplines.  ALCs give students an opportunity to read and discuss, in a foreign language, selected texts pertinent to the subject matter of the course.  For example, an ALC in French is offered for International Finance.  Students taking this course have an opportunity to meet one additional hour per week with the ALC instructor to discuss the Business course texts in French.  ALCs are offered in French, Italian, Japanese, Russian and Spanish.
  • A minor in International Business that includes a study abroad experience.
  • A minor in Global studies.
  • Local internships in various languages.
  • A minor in Italian Studies, Russian Studies or in East Asian Studies, both of which allow you to capitalize on your Russian, Italian, or Japanese language proficiency.
  • Study Abroad - opportunities for study in a variety of content areas in a second language.  A few examples of the courses our students have taken in other countries are:  marketing in Germany, political science in France, art history in Japan and Spain.
  • Visits to Quebec, with its rich heritage in French language and francophone culture - Quebec is only one hour north of us.  Your French language skills will enable you to make the most of travel to another country so near to us.
  • Access to the languages and cultures of Saint Michael's international population.
  • Study of a third language.  Students tell us that learning a third language is easier than learning the second!
  • A major in French or Spanish.
