After
graduating from Brandeis University in 1985, David had no idea
what he wanted to do with his life. After
a brief stint as a radio
and club DJ in London
(a fact that
invariably
cracks up his
students), David returned to his native New York City
and took a production assistant job at CNN. Before leaving, David
wrote scripts, cut tape, edited packages, field produced, and was
promoted to assignment editor. He then returned to
school, getting a masters and Ph.D. at New York University. He
came to Saint Michael's College in 1996.
David
has written articles for the Wall Street Journal, New
York Magazine, and other publications. He is the author of Just
the Facts: How "Objectivity" Came to Define American
Journalism and Tuned
Out: Why Young People Don't Follow the News (Oxford University
Press, 2005). David founded Jhistory, an Internet group
for journalism historians, in 1994. In 1998-1999, he was head of
the History Division of the AEJMC. In 2002, the AEJMC awarded
David the Krieghbaum Under-40 Award for Outstanding Achievement
in Research, Teaching and Public Service. He lives in Burlington,
Vermont with his wife, Barbara Richmond (whom he met at CNN) and
their two children.
