What is this course about?

The Catalogue description: 'A thematic and historical inquiry into challenges presented to Christianity by selected scientific, cultural, political and religious developments in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and into Christian responses to those challenges. Themes covered will include the Enlightenment’s legacy of critique, 19th and 20th century debates over evolution, developments in biblical scholarship, the consequences of the Shoah for Jewish-Christian relations, the question of religious pluralism, and selected developments in contemporary Christianity. Original and secondary sources will be read.'

The Fall 2008 course will deal with three major areas of interaction between Christianity and the modern world (see the Syllabus for details). These topics have been chosen either because of their historical importance and/or because they are of contemporary interest. The aim of the course is to enable the student to develop a deeper understanding of these issues and to have an opportunity to develop her/his knowledge and critical skills in discussing contemporary religious questions.
