
THE HISTORY MAJOR AT
SAINT MICHAEL'S COLLEGE
The History major offers courses focusing on a variety of geographical regions: the United States, Latin America, Europe (Ancient--Modern), East Asia, and the Middle East. The department emphasizes personalized attention by faculty, and upper level seminars which do not exceed fifteen students.

The Department is also associated with one interdisciplinary major (American Studies) and three minors (History, East Asian Studies, and Medieval Studies). The Department encourages its majors to take advantage of Internship and Study Abroad opportunities. Recently, students have completed Internships in a variety of settings, including the Office of the Governor of Vermont, the Immigration and Naturalization Service, and the Shelburne Museum. History majors going abroad for one or two semesters have studied in a variety of countries, including the United Kingdom, Italy, Japan, and Ireland. Academic Study Tours offer short study-abroad opportunities conducted and taught by Saint Michael's College faculty. Current courses include "Germany After the Wall" (History 299) and "An Academic Study Tour of Mexico" (History 277). Since 1991 the Department has sponsored its own chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, the International Honor Society in History. The annual Norbert A. Kuntz Lecture Series brings an historian of international stature to Saint Michael's College to address the community.
