~ History of the Society ~
The
National Honor Society in History, Phi Alpha Theta, was established at the
Phi Alpha Theta is also a professional society, the objective of which is the promotion of the study of history through research, good teaching, publication and the exchange of thoughts and ideas. Its mission is to bring students, teachers and writers of history together intellectually and socially.
On February 15, 1991, Saint Michael's College chapter, Alpha Epsilon Nu, was founded; charter members are indicated with an asterisk. Initiation into a chapter confers life membership on the individual.

~ Programs ~
· Biennial Convention - Students (undergraduate and graduate) are invited to participate and present their own papers, meet faculty, historians and other students, and take part in special events and tours of sites of historical interest. Phi Alpha Theta underwrites a portion of the cost of transportation for one delegate from each chapter.
· Special Programs - at the annual meetings of the American Historical Association (AHA), Organization of American Historians, Southern Historical Association, Western History Association, Pacific Coast Branch of the AHA, Southwest Social Science Association, and many state historical associations.
· Regional Meetings - chapters located within close proximity meet, usually for one day, bringing together members of various chapters to present papers.

Chapter Meetings - current
undergraduate and alumni members are invited to participate in chapter meetings
throughout the year. Student members serve the chapter as President,
Vice-President, Secretary-Treasurer. Various
activities may also be planned by the chapter. In the past, Saint
Michael's College members have visited local nursing homes with presentations,
provided fellow undergraduates with help writing terms papers, and travelled to
~ Publications ~
· The Historian - a quarterly journal whose pages are open to all members for the publication of their studies in all fields of history. Saint Michael's College Durick Library subscribes to The Historian (current copies shelved with Periodicals; back issues in Bound Periodicals). The journal also contains book reviews, news of the field, and other items of interest to the society's members. A one-year subscription is included in the initiation fee. Subscription renewals are through Phi Alpha Theta (address below).
· The News Letter - (issued three times per year) carries news items of all current activities, awards and grants of the Society. Subscription through Phi Alpha Theta.
· Handbooks - Phi Alpha Theta publishes numerous handbooks of interest to historians.

~ Fellowships and Awards ~
· Six Annual Paper Prize Awards - currently this includes the Lynn W. Turner Award ($250) for the best paper by an undergraduate member; as well as four awards ($200 each) for papers submitted by either a graduate or undergraduate member. Papers must be recommended by the chapter Faculty Advisor or the Department Chair. Awarded papers are reviewed by the editor for possible publication in The Historian.
· Nine Graduate Scholarship Awards - including the A.F. Zimmerman Scholarship ($1,250), Thomas S. Morgan Memorial Scholarship ($850), William E. Parrish Scholarship ($805) presented to a student member entering graduate school for the first time for work leading to an M.A. in History; other awards granted to students entering or continuing advanced studies.
· Best Chapter Awards - ($250 each for the purchase of books) presented for a specified schedule of activities and projects carried out by the chapter.
· Other - Phi Alpha Theta also offers the possibility of students to intern at various offices; prizes for Faculty Advisors; book awards; underwriting grants as part of PAT's Manuscript Publication Award.
