Our GWS program is an interdisciplinary program that draws from fine arts, humanities and the social and natural sciences. Issues pertaining to gender may encompass sexual identity, orientation, social practice, and historical change. Courses may consider how biology intersects with culture, how gender creates and maintains structures of power, and how gendered identity affects the understanding of personhood. The purpose of such exploration is to expand curricular possibilities that enable students to comprehend more fully the complex factors that shape their experiences of themselves, others, and the world.
The Major: Here at Saint Michael's there is currently no official major. However, there is one in the works and may be available in the near future. Until then, there is the possibility to declare an independent major through the Curriculum Committee. If this is something that you are interested in please contact Dr. Sharon Lamb. Please note that this must be done during your Sophomore year.

The Minor: There are five courses required to fulfill the minor.
GS203- Gender Issues in Society
is an introductory level requirement and GS 308- Topics in Gender Studies is highly recommended and the subject will change from year to year. The remaining courses can be chosen from any other department as long as there are no more than two from any one department (except GWS), and there are three at the 200 level or above.

For students in the Class of 2004 and beyond GS101-Introduction to Gender/Women's Studies is also required.  Further, a senior paper is required by April of Senior year to the coordinator of GWS.  This paper will be a summary of five extracurricular events including analysis from a GWS perspective.  See course catalogue for events that qualify.  Events can be found through the Women's Center website.
