SPINPlus System

You are invited to take advantage of a web-based system called SPINPlus that includes a funding opportunities database called SPIN (Sponsored Programs Information Network), a database of investigator profiles called GENIUS (Global Expertise Network for Industry and University Scholars) and a matching alert system called SMARTS (SPIN Matching and Research Transmittal Service).  These three components work together as an integrated system and are accessible at your institution.

SPIN is a comprehensive database of funding opportunities gathered from federal agencies, foundations, professional societies, associations and corporations.  It is updated daily and can be searched by sponsor, amount, deadline, funding type and area of interest and other criteria.

GENIUS is a database, which contains profiles of scholars and researchers at universities and research institutions.  GENIUS profiles are used for identifying interest or expertise within the university as well as globally, for information to be used with SMARTS and for storing curriculum vitae. You choose whether your GENIUS profile is private, accessible to your institution only or accessible to the global community.

SMARTS is the electronic matching and notification system that sends targeted funding information to you via your e-mail.  The keywords that reflect your areas of interest or expertise and other criteria that you select in your GENIUS profile are used to search current opportunities in the SPIN database of funding opportunities.  Matching occurs electronically on a daily basis and any results are sent directly to you.

Important Note:  Any Saint Michael's College faculty or staff member can use the SPIN database.  In order to receive advance notification of upcoming grants under the SMARTS program or to be in the GENIUS database for contact by potential research collaborators, you must complete a profile under the GENIUS page.  This profile will only be activated when you have completed all required fields, and your profile is validated by the Saint Michael's College SPINPLUS administrator, Angela Irvine.

It is not necessary to contact the SPINPLUS administrator to have your profile validated:  Once you have completed your profile and saved it, the SPINPLUS system will automatically email the College’s SPINPLUS administrator requesting validation of your profile.   The system administrator will validate the profile, thus entering your profile in both the GENIUS and SMARTS systems.
