Tim Whiteford, Associate
Professor of Education
Tim Whiteford, Associate
Professor of Education received funding for the development
of the graduate-level education class, Mathematics Education and
Diversity. The grant funded stipends for teachers as well as
refreshments during the seminar.
The primary goal for the project was to hold a
one-day seminar that would bring together teachers from the fields
of ESL, math education, and special education, to explore issues
related to teaching math to students with diverse needs in the K-8
classroom. Information and ideas developed through this seminar were
subsequently used in the development of a new course GED612 Math and
Diversity being offered through the Graduate Education program in
the 2007 Fall semester.
Fifteen teachers from local area schools, as well as
several Saint Michael’s college faculty, attended the one-day
seminar to discuss issues and share experiences related to teaching
math to students with diverse needs. The meeting was an unequivocal
success and further reinforced the need to continue dialog to
improve services in math education for students who are English
language learners, have math disabilities, come from economically
disadvantaged homes, or have special needs.
