Requirements for the English Major

The following courses are required for the English major. The Department does not require that courses be taken sequentially; however it is usually advisable to organize courses in a coherent manner with 100-200 level courses taken the first and second year followed by upper level courses junior and senior year. Exceptions include EN 325 Critical Theory, which should not be taken before junior year, and EN 410 Senior Seminar, which is taken senior year. High school students scoring 3 or above on the AP English Literature exam receive credit for EN 123.

Genres courses and Survey courses are listed at the 200 level. Period and National literature courses and courses on individual authors are listed at the 300-400 level.

Required for the Major (11 courses; 40 credits):

EN 123 Introduction to Literary Studies--an introduction to literary analysis (4 credits)

EN 325 Critical Theory--A study of contemporary literary theory (4 credits)

EN 251 American Literature I--American Literature from 1600 to 1850 (3 credits)
