Requirements for the English Major
The following courses are
required for the English major. The Department does not require that courses be taken
sequentially; however it is usually advisable to organize courses in a coherent manner
with 100-200 level courses taken the first and second year followed by upper level courses
junior and senior year. Exceptions include EN 325 Critical Theory, which should not be
taken before junior year, and EN 410 Senior Seminar, which is taken senior year. High
school students scoring 3 or above on the AP English Literature exam
receive credit for EN 123.
Genres courses and Survey courses are listed at the 200
level. Period and National literature courses and courses on individual authors are listed
at the 300-400 level.
Required for the Major (11 courses; 40

Introduction to Literary Studies--an introduction to literary analysis (4 credits)
EN 325
Critical Theory--A study of contemporary literary theory (4 credits)
EN 410
Senior Seminar--Seminar course with varying topics, includes a thesis (4 credits)

Literature II--English Lit. from 1750-present (3 credits)

American Literature I--American Literature from 1600 to 1850

5 Additional English courses; 4 of which must be at
the 300/400 level (19-20 credits)
Students completing the minimum requirements should have
at least 40 credits in English. Students may elect to take additional courses but must not
exceed 52 credits in the major.
Requirements for the English Minor
To declare a minor, pick up the appropriate form from the Registrars Office, have
your advisor and the English Department Chair sign it, then return it to the Registrar.
You may declare a minor at any time, but you must complete the following courses:
