Educational Technology

General:

1.      The Educational Technology (Ed Tech) Committee has engaged in a wide range of activities over the years due mainly to the dynamic nature of technology and the current level of experience and need among SMC faculty members with technology.  Therefore, we feel it is appropriate that Ed Tech does not have a tightly constraining and/or prescriptive mission.  As a result, we feel we are able to assess the current scenario and determine the best means of serving the faculty in any given year.

2.      When determining how best to serve the faculty, we strive to consider the diversity of our faculty.  We have used the terms “cutting edge crowd” and “late majority.”  Thus, sometimes we will target one group over the other depending on the situation and the input we receive from the faculty and administration.

3.      We feel that the College’s value of the importance of our work is reflected in our budget.  Thus, we feel we are only as effective in serving the faculty educational technology needs to the extent that we can fund initiatives, experiments, scholarship, and learning experiences that enhance utilizing technology.

Fall 2003:

1.      Organized and posted data from summer experiences of three online course experiments (funded from last year’s Ed Tech).

2.      This year, we have only received one proposal for an online course.  This has led us to rethink our present focus.

3.      We expect to establish a series of “brown bag” sessions to relay to the faculty in an informal way, some of the results of funded initiatives (recent ones as well as any future ones).

4.      An Ed Tech website is planned to provide information to the Saint Michael’s community on a regular basis.
