Educational Technology Committee

EdTech Meeting Thursday, February 16th 2005

Attendance: John Devlin, Jo Ellis-Monaghan, Sue Breeyear, Greta Pangborn, Steve Burks, Bill Anderson

Bill Wilson accepted our proposal and approved $5000 for the Teaching With Technology Workshop.

There is an educause workshop on mobile computing in Maryland on March 29th – 30th.  Sue Breeyear is considering attending the workshop, and IT might consider sending a faculty member as well.

Tablet Discussion:

  • Tech Steering is working on the big question of what a proposal should look like.
  • There is a meeting next week with the wireless vendor, which should help us answer a few of the infrastructure questions.
  • The capital budget depends on the enrollment / financial aid picture for next year, so it is an open question what we will be able to fund (tablets for all vs. a pilot program).  One possibility that the replacement cycle will be extended by a year, but this could cause trouble since failure rates are MUCH higher in year four.  (We are already seeing a spike in battery failure, for example.)
  • One proposal involves a student mandate along the lines of a ‘really should buy’ recommendation for Fall ’07 and a ‘must buy’ requirement in Fall ’08.  Another possibility might be to go for an ’09 target rather than an ’08 target.
  • Wireless is, even under the best scenario, not nearly as fast as Ethernet.  We might need to advertise what the limitations of some of the new technologies are, so folks do not think these issues were created by our implementation.

There was surprise expressed by some faculty members that the faculty email list includes some nonfaculty members (i.e., administrators) and we were asked to consider this topic in ed tech.

  • Since this list does not have a single “owner” monitoring the recipient list would be challenging.
  • It might be useful to offer faculty some instruction on creating their own distribution lists.
  • We are also concerned that some folks might have a false sense of privacy when writing to such a list.  If you are going to email something to that wide a distribution list (even if it contains only faculty) you need to be aware that your email might be forwarded.

We will have an expert on campus for a workshop on copyright issues on May 24th.

We will meet on March 2nd to discuss the updates on the pilot program and the faculty assembly announcement for the March 3rd meeting.  (In the meantime Greta will meet with Will Mentor & Mark Lubkowitz of the tech steering committee.)
