Web Project

  1. Web page design

  2. Web page graphics, (look through the free areas)

  3. Online newspapers, Newslink

  4. Online magazines, Newslink

  5. Chat rooms (try out Geocites chat, for starters, then look up other chat areas in Yahoo)

  6. Local news on the Internet... start with yahoo's “get local” section.

  7. Dating, sexual identity, and gender on the Internet. Perhaps the chat rooms are the best place to begin.

With a classmate, prepare an 8 minute presentation for the class (8 minutes goes quickly, so stay focused!). The presentation should focus on one of the above topics, and should contain two elements: a brief discussion of what you've found, and an understanding of the issue that transcends mere summary. How, for example, does an online magazine differ from a printed one? What different assumptions do these publications make about their audiences? Treat the assignment as a factual and intellectual report. If you need to get here early to add “bookmarks,” please do so.

In addition to the oral presentation, please provide a summary of the intellectual issues that you raised in your report. Bring 17 copies to class. You should also write the URL of a links page, which you should create, pointing to ten sites you find especially useful or illustrative of your overall point.
