The term paper for Media Law and Ethics is a five-page essay (typed and double spaced) on an ethical topic of your choosing.

The requirements of the paper are as follows:

1. The paper should address a media ethics issue.  Your own point of view should be apparent in your conclusion, if not before. Feel free to use the "I" pronoun.

2. The paper should be intellectually challenging, factually accurate, and polished. Your aim should be to impress me with your analysis and to reveal your logic and intelligence;  don’t let your evidence make the argument for you.

3. You must cite at least one law case, perhaps distinguishing the ethical issue from a legal one.

4. You must cite an ethical issue from class notes and an ethical or legal case from the readings (meeting this requirement might also satisfy #3).

5. You must take care to clearly cite quoted and paraphrased material. Read the plagiarism handout carefully.  The bottom line is that you must take care not to use the words or ideas of others without giving them proper credit. Plagiarism is surprisingly easy to detect; if you plagiarize, you'll fail this course and could be expelled from St. Michael’s.  Plagiarism is wrong, but learning about it need not be fraught with anxiety; I am happy to answer your questions about what is and is not plagiarism.

These requirements are strict but still allow you great leeway to choose your topic, style, and approach.

The first draft of the paper is due April 24, the final draft April 26.
