Robert Motherwell was an Abstract Expressionist painter of the New York School in the 1940's. He was the only abstract expressionist to embrace printmaking. Although he was influenced by Max Earnst, YvesTanguy, and Andre Masson he was largely self-taught. He married Helen Frankenthaler, who was also an American Abstract Expressionist painter.
