Chapter 9: Intercultural Challenges: Recognizing and Dealing with Difference
Stereotyping Awareness

We are all guilty of forming stereotypes of other cultures or co-cultures—perceptions based on very limited and often misguided information.  As an experiment in raising our awareness about stereotyping, let’s find out how consistent and pervasive our stereotypes are.  For each of the cultural groups listed below, write both a positive and a negative comment.  Try not to base your comments on your intellectual knowledge but rather just write the first thing that comes to mind, i.e., something the typical “man (or woman) on the street” might say.
