INTRODUCTION

We made this page for new students of Saint Michael's College in order to share information about restaurants in the area. First of all, we surveyed SMC students about restaurants that they would recommend. The students were willing to help us. Then after the survey, we picked out the three best restaurants results of the survey. When we chose these three restaurants, we considered their location, because the restaurants for new students need to be close to the College and easy to get to by public transportation. Then we visited these restaurants to take a look at the atmosphere, try their food, and interview with the managers. Now if you want to know the results of our experiment, just scroll down or click on the links avobe. Enjoy your visual trip to the restaurants!!

RESULTS OF SURVEY OF AREA  RESTAURANTS

These are the results of the survey. We asked 34 people at Saint Michael's College, and they suggested many restaurants. Then we categorized these restaurants by type of food: American, Italian, Japanese, Chinese, Ethnic, steak, and French, and indicated the number of votes for each. We picked out the three restaurants that received more than two votes. However, we chose some restaurants that did not get the highest score but were in close proximity to Saint Michael's College. Therefore, we focused on Papa Frank's, the Rathskeller, and Sakura where we can go by public transport.

Papa Frank’s Italian Restaurant got a great reputation as a delicious, a cheap, and a cheerful restaurant. It was founded by Frank Sciara in 1985. The building is wooden, old, and quaint and is located in small town. All of the dishes are authentic Italian food and taste good. However, the most important selling point is its low price and large amount. ‘Today’s Special’ changes everyday and the price is only $3.95! Of course, the taste is fabulous and the volume is great!

Most of the regular customers are Saint Michael’s students and regular local people. They and the restaurant's lively crew make up its friendly atmosphere.

These are the dishes that we ordered when we visited the rest for the first time. Our orders were Today's Special, Calzone, Spaghetti Carbonara, and Garden salad. They were very reasonable, and large. We were satisfied with them. Of couse they tasted good.

Key point!!  Today's special may be sold out early. If you really want to try it, we recommend you go there before 7 o'clock, but if you go there after that they serve another dish as Today's Special.

We took a picture with the restaurant's famous waitress, "Mama Rosa". She is a very very nice and kind lady. She helped us to decide on our dishes and drinks. You can see her picture on the wall there. We are sure her smile makes its atmosphere comfortable.

We strongly recommend that you visit Papa Frank’s Italian Restaurant.

The RATHSKELLER-a grill and bar- was established in1977. The name RATHSKELLER comes from the former restaurant that the owner, Lou Farrington, used to work at The owner is both a cook and a waiter, so she does all things by herself. She is also proud of her homemade soups and special drinks –frozen drinks.

The restaurant is small, but you can relax and have a good time there. It has also a big yard called "Backyard Café" for parties where we (adults only) can play horseshoes.

Summer tourists, local people, and local businessmen come there for lunch. According to the owner, she knows most of her customers well because they eat there on a regular basis, so, you can imagine the owner serves “yummy” dishes.

When we went there, we ordered homemade soup and a drink(frozen drink). They tasted very good. We jonly tasted a small sample of the restaurant's food and drink, but we understood why she recommended them.

Good news for smokers!! You can smoke in the dining room and pub.

Attention!! At the pub time, the restaurant does not serve dinner  but only alcohol, some sandwiches, homemade soup, and so on.

It serves fine Japanese food, such as sushi, sashimi, tempura, and sukiyaki. The picture on the left is una-ju served with miso soup this is broiled eel with dark sauce served over hot rice in a Japanese style box.

The manager especially recommends the sushi that the Japanese cook makes. ‘Sushi Heaven’ (the right picture) is an assorted sushi that is served on a miniature ship made of wood. It includs the chef's choice of 2 rolls, 11 sashimi and 14 nigiri sushi. It looks gorgeous and attractive. We recommend that customers share it.

There is also a sushi-bar, and all sushi are prepared to order and will be served when ready. Sushi a-la-carte is available at all times, so customers can request the menu. The cheapest sushi costs $1.25 per 1 dish.

Also, customers can choose between two kinds of seating—a Japanese style table on Tatami mats or a Western style table with chairs.

The food is good and the atmosphere is nice.
SAKURA is the best Japanese restaurant around here!!
