Five biology majors traveled to the Benthic Ecology Meeting in March 2009 with Professor Declan McCabe to present the results of their ecological research.

All of the students participated in the Vermont EPSCoR Streams Project in summer 2008 and had assembled a large data set documenting macroinvertebrate communities, phosphorous levels, physical habitat parameters, and coliform bacteria counts from 15 stream sites. Each student presented a poster addressing a different question using subsets of the combined data.

The annual Benthic Ecology Meeting is an opportunity to share ecological research done in marine and freshwater habitats. The meeting included presentations from undergraduate students side by side with members of the National Academy of Sciences and provided an excellent opportunity for constructive feedback. In addition to the poster presentations, there was three days of concurrent oral presentations covering everything from coral bleaching, to hurricane damage, to land-use impacts on freshwater habitats.

The group took time out to visit the Texas State Aquarium before the meeting wrap-up party on the hanger deck of the USS Lexington, a World War Two Aircraft Carrier and museum anchored in Corpus Christi Bay.

The students trips were financed through travel grants awarded to each student by the Lake Champlain Research Consortium (LCRC), and supplemented by Saint Michael's Vice President of Academic Affairs, Karen Talentino. Their research was also presented at the Deanís reception, the LCRC Symposium, and the National EPSCoR conference held in Burlington in December.
