an e-newsletter for students and alumni of saint michael's biology department

   Volume 1, Issue 2
                                                                            Spring 2008
In this edition of Biology Matters,
we highlight our most recent achievements, which relate to a larger pattern of success seen by our biology students, alumni and faculty. Seven current biology majors will be inducted into Phi Beta Kappa this spring (and one biology major is already a member, inducted as a junior). Another five students have received summer research grants from the National Science Foundation through the Vermont Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (VT EPSCoR).  Mike Koziol ’73, (biology/chemistry double major) is the eighth biology alumnus to be inducted into the Saint Michael's College Academic Hall of Fame, out of 18 total inductees. Throughout this academic year, biology faculty members have received major research grants, authored textbooks, organized research conferences and developed courses with innovative pedagogy that integrates the study of biology with the liberal arts tradition of Saint Michael's College. Overall, the biology program is currently the college’s third largest major, by student enrollment.

We hope you enjoy reading about some of these accomplishments. We were impressed by the descriptions of career achievements that many alumni submitted in response to our inaugural edition of the newsletter; stay tuned for additional alumni spotlights in our upcoming newsletters. This April, Jim O’Brien ’87, will visit Saint Michael's College to share his expertise in environmental consulting with students from biology, business and the first-year seminar class, Solving Environmental Problems (see the Upcoming Events section). We look forward to continuing to forge strong bonds with our alumni.

"After graduation I plan on attending graduate school to complete a Ph.D. program. Currently I am in the middle of my interviews.  It’s really an exciting time."
