Alumni Profile
Elena Wellens '96, D.P.M.

I graduated from Saint Michael's with a major in biology and a double minor in biochemistry and philosophy. I went on to attend Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and graduated in 2000. I completed my residency in foot and ankle reconstructive surgery and limb salvage at Crozer Keystone Health System in 2003. During my tenure there I had the opportunity to take courses at the AO International Center for Internal Fixation in Davos, Switzerland, the Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin, Ireland and Shriner's Hospital for Crippled Children in Dallas, Texas.

After completion of residency I joined a group practice for a year, then opened my own practice in 2004. I currently have three offices in South Jersey and am on staff at three local hospital health systems. I am also a clinical and surgical instructor for the Virtua Health system podiatric residency program and a surgical instructor for the Kennedy health system podiatric residency. This past year the Virtua residents chose me as "Attending of the Year" for 2007-2008. They noted my positive style of teaching and leadership as the reason for their choice.

I was married in July 2007 to Steven Philipp, and we live in Marlton, NJ. My four siblings also graduated from Saint Mike's and are all doing well. Roger '95 is a manager in credit at Marlin Leasing; Susan '00 is a middle school science teacher and another alumna of the biology department; Michael '02 is a senior accountant at the University of Pennsylvania; and Bryan '06 is a senior analyst at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.

I owe my gratitude and thanks to the science department at Saint Mike's for providing me with an outstanding science education as well as the one on one attention to help me achieve my dreams and aspirations. I always wanted to be a doctor and my professors at Saint Mike's helped make that dream come true. I owe special thanks to Dr. Donna Bozzone. It was her enthusiasm for teaching and amazing intelligence that inspired me to excel. As a woman in science, she is an outstanding role model and I thank her for her confidence in me.
