Welcome to the Spring 2011 issue of Biology Matters. It has
been a very busy, and at times emotionally challenging, spring
semester � as you can read for yourself. Because our program is
growing, there has been, and continues to be, a lot going on. A
group of students and faculty enjoyed a tropical ecology trip to
Costa Rica over the holiday break between semesters, interest in the
Biology major is growing, student research interest and
opportunities are very strong, we�ve had a large number of visits
from prospective students and their families, and we continue to
hear from alumni. We also suffered a tremendous loss this semester �
our dear friend and colleague Doug Green died of cancer over the
spring break. So although the spring brings with it longer, warmer,
and brighter days, it will take a bit longer for us to truly get in
the spirit.
