Chair's Message
Fall 2010

Greetings for the Biology Department, and welcome to the Fall 2010 issue of Biology Matters. This past summer was our busiest ever in terms of student-faculty research activity, and some of those projects are briefly summarized in this issue. In addition, one of our labs (301) was renovated over the summer and technology upgrades for our other labs are planned for the upcoming break between semesters.

Fall is always busy, and this year has been no exception. The Biology program welcomed about 60 new students this fall (first-year and transfer), bringing our total number of majors up to almost 200. To help us keep up with the demands of our growing program, we will be adding another lab coordinator/instructor in October - Laura Benton will be assisting with lab preparation in some upper level courses, and also teaching a course for non-science majors in the spring semester.

To make it easier for us to share current information with prospective students, alumni, current students, or anyone else who might be interested, our Bio Department website has been restructured somewhat, and now includes a link to our Biology Blog site which I've been using to post somewhat regular news updates. And we continue to hear from alumni keeping us informed of where they are and what they are up to - some of this has been added to the brief alumni profiles on our website. So please enjoy the newsletter, check in on our website and blog from time to time, and keep in touch! Sincerely,

Doug Facey
Chair, Department of Biology
