Fall is Not Easy: Applying this Book to the Red Maple Tree
Materials:
- Fall is Not Easy; by Marty Kelly
- Unlined White Paper
- Crayons
- Pencils
- Red Maple Tree
- Clip Boards
Task: Why isn’t Fall Easy?
“Did you know?”:
Red Maples have very rough toothed leaves. They are tall trees and can grow up to fifty feet high. They are mostly located in northern regions of the United States and Canada . They are also called soft maples because their bark is not very hard.
Procedure:
- First the adult will read the story Fall is Not Easy by Marty Kelly. The adult will ask some questions about the book during the story and after the story. Then we will turn to look at our real tree and everybody will be handed a sheet of white paper. Everybody will also receive a clipboard and a pencil.
- First we will draw a picture of the tree as it looks in front of you right now. After we are done drawing it with a pencil we will color it with some crayons. Once that picture is completed we will write #1 drawing on top of it.
- Then we will get another piece of white paper and we will draw the tree again. After we are done drawing the tree we will get the crayons. The difference is this time we can decorate the tree anyway we want. Remember how the tree in the book decorates itself in many different ways like polka dots and stripes.
- We will bring the book outside with us so that if you need help remembering what happened in the book you will be able to look at it when you need to. After we are done decorating the second picture we will write #2 drawing on the top of it.
- After everybody is done with their two drawings we will all share the drawing we did together.
Product:
The two pictures they drew of the tree.
