Kente cloth is an Asante ceremonial cloth which was hand-woven on a treadle loom.   Four or five inch strips of the colorful cloth are hand woven together to form special designs.  There are many different sizes and colors each representing something different.   Kente is a historical representation of the culture including moral values, Asante philosophy, religion, political status and royal status.  The original name for Kente was "nasduaso" which means  to "cloth hand-woven on a loom".  The term Kente originated from Kenten which translates to basket cloth.  According to Asante elders the cloth was made to please Asantethene.   The effort was exhausting to create these extravagant cloths and were mainly created for royalty.  At ceremonies the Queen Mother along with the king would each wear a special ceremonial Kente.
