Ritual
| Spirits
|
For the voodoo faithful, the belief in the spirits mediates between them and the world, as well as between individuals. Each spirit, or lwa, can be likened to a word in a language; in itself, it has only a narrow meaning. The spirits gain their importance as an ensemble of families, working to complement or oppose each other, together forming the voodoo pantheon. (4) |
