Motherhood

in West Africa

Motherhood plays an important role in every society, but within African culture a woman’s worth often depends on the number of children she bears (Drewal 186).  In traditional African societies, a woman’s main purpose is to be a child bearer and nurturer.  Realizing the importance of this position, there are many rituals and a large amount of artwork devoted to the steps women take to become mothers.
