GLOSSARY OF TERMS

Traditional-  Landscapes defined as traditional should not be understood as primitive, barbaric or even undeveloped.   "What makes a tradition is meaningful repetition."  Today in Africa many new villages are considered traditional because they display similarities with the "small- scale societies of the past."  However, these new communities do not hold the same meaning as those settlements created and occupied by indigenous cultures long ago.

Bush/ Wilderness-A space is defined as bush if it lacks any man made  objects. Considered to be uncivilized or disorderly.

Village- A civilized space where clarity, order, law and social harmony are fostered.  Attempts to control the forces of nature are reflected in the design of architectural structures.  Things of the bush, things seen as raw nature, are forbidden to enter the village; acts proper to the village are forbidden in the bush .

Embodied Space- The social reaction to a space.

Inscribed Space - Effect the environment has on a culture and space.

Spatial Tactics- Power tactics through spatial planning .
