Mathematics History in Every Course
Let’s encourage students to learn the history
of the mathematics they are learning while they are learning
the mathematics. In this presentation, we will discuss ideas
for integrating the history of mathematics in the teaching
of our discipline. Those of us at institutions preparing
school teachers must show evidence that our students are
learning the history of the various branches of mathematics
to obtain certification of our programs. Methods for
integrating the history will be presented that have been
implemented in a wide variety of courses, to include College
Algebra, Introductory Statistics, Calculus, and Differential
Equations. A learner-centered approach in which students
take an active role in investigating and reporting on the
historical topics will be the emphasis.
